It's a shame that since the closing of the former Ammonoosuc Ranger District station on Trudeau Road in Bethlehem, no one has bothered to maintain the property. During a recent drive-by of the old Ammo headquarters I was dismayed to see that the U. S. Forest Service has allowed the once attractive property to take on all the characteristics of an unwanted and abandoned piece of real estate. With the front lawn unmowed, winter tree damage left as is, and virtually no upkeep whatsoever in evidence, it's hard to believe anyone will want to take this property if and when the government decides to sell it or give it away…

This weekend’s Wildflower Festival at The Rocks Estate marks its 30th year and will feature programs ranging from photography and floral identification to making flowers a part of dinner.

The festival will include guided walks along the Mile Path, which meanders through the historic Rocks Estate property, where the Glessner family, original owners of the estate, collected and planted a plethora of flowers.

The cost for Saturday’s all-day Wildflower Festival is $15 and includes lunch and all programs. A $5 discount is given with each lupine festival book presented. Horse drawn rides are available at an extra cost.

Smoke from Quebec Wildfires 5-31-10 From Top of Mt Wash

The big news on Mount Washington right now actually hails from Canada. Several wildfires broke out in Quebec last week, and southerly winds carried the thick, hazy smoke to the White Mountains and beyond. The result was extremely low visibility and reports of a wood fire smell as far south as Boston. Luckily, today’s rain is helping firefighters contain the blaze, which has already claimed more than 250,000 acres.

Considering the warm, dry conditions of late, it’s easy to see how the fires got started. May ended with just 3.44” of precipitation on the summit, which is less than half of the 8.21” average. A new record high of 65 degrees was set on the 25th (destroying the 61-degree record from 2007) and another record high of 59 degrees was matched on the 26th. Thank goodness the cold and fog returned today—with all the sun and warm temperatures, our crew might have forgotten where they were!
