"The town of Bethlehem was another favorite: the poet claimed it was one place she could get relief from her hay fever.

Larcom loved the White Mountains, which provided her with "rest and strength, aspiration and exultation." Unlike Whittier, she was a hiker and a climber. One of her poems, "Asleep on a Summit," was written after a climb of Mt. Washington. "Mountaineer's Prayer" was written upon hearing of Whittier's death."
