"Genuine inn-keepers fiercely defend their independence. In Bethlehem, New Hampshire, Brad and Ilja Chapman manage Adair, one of the loveliest inns in New England, a remote 1920s country house hidden down a twisting drive about 20 minutes from Meredith. They run the place themselves, with a chef and a couple of maids, and pride themselves on knowing their customers. The bedrooms have neither phone nor television, which contributes to the restful air. Ilja, who is Dutch, likes to talk about the "Adair family", which gives you some idea of what you might expect as a guest."

"TSA's VIPR program may be expanding. According to the Washington Times, 'TSA has always intended to expand beyond the confines of airport terminals. Its agents have been conducting more and more surprise groping sessions for women, children and the elderly in locations that have nothing to do with aviation.' In Tennessee earlier this month, bus passengers in Nashville and Knoxville were searched in addition to the truck searches discussed here previously. Earlier this year in Savannah, Georgia, TSA forced a group of train travelers, including young children, to be patted down. (They were getting off the train, not on.) Ferry passengers have also been targeted. According to TSA Administrator John Pistole's testimony before the Senate last June, 'TSA conducted more than 8,000 VIPR operations in the [previous] 12 months, including more than 3,700 operations in mass-transit and passenger-railroad venues.' He wants a 50% budget increase for VIPR for 2012. Imagine what TSA would do with the extra funding.""

Vive La Revolution! by Bill Bonner
Vive La Revolution! by Bill Bonner:
"But the poor protestors are just victims of history. When the US embraced its empire it condemned its middle classes. Why? Because that’s how empires work. They bring in cheap goods – and sometimes money itself – from outside. Whether they are taken as booty or traded for the imperial currency, the effect is about the same; they undermine local industries and local wages."

Is Cain's 9-9-9 plan really a VAT in disguise?
Bachmann on Cain’s 9-9-9 plan: Turn those numbers upside down « Hot Air:
“The business tax in the Cain plan bears no resemblance to the present corporate income tax. The tax would apply to gross sales less dividends paid and all purchases from other companies, including investment goods. Thus, there would be no deduction for wages.”
This is far more similar to a value-added tax than to a corporate income tax.
VAT rate in UK = 20%
VAT rate in France = 19.6%

American Due Process: 1945 vs. 2011

The Day America Died by Paul Craig Roberts:
"Many expected President Obama to re-establish the accountability of government to law. Instead, he went further than Bush/Cheney and asserted the unconstitutional power not only to hold American citizens indefinitely in prison without bringing charges, but also to take their lives without convicting them in a court of law. Obama asserts that the US Constitution notwithstanding, he has the authority to assassinate US citizens, who he deems to be a "threat," without due process of law.
In other words, any American citizen who is moved into the threat category has no rights and can be executed without trial or evidence."

Mark Steyn: Obama’s magical thinking on green jobs | obama, steyn, green - Opinion - The Orange County Register:
"German taxpayers subsidize “green jobs” in their wind-power industry to the tune of a quarter of a million dollars per worker per year: $250,000 per “green job” would pay for a lot of real jobs, even in the European Union. Last year, it was revealed that the Spanish government paid $800,000 for every “green job” on a solar panel assembly line. I had assumed carelessly that this must be a world record in terms of taxpayer subsidy per fraudulent “green job.” But it turns out those cheapskate Spaniards with their lousy nickel-and-dime “green jobs” subsidy just weren’t thinking big. The Obama administration’s $38.6 billion “clean technology” program was supposed to “create or save” 65,000 jobs. Half the money has been spent – $17.2 billion – and we have 3,545 jobs to show for it. That works out to an impressive $4,851,904.09 per “green job.” A world record! Take that, you loser Spaniards! USA! USA!"

"Almost nine months after a Missouri dairy was ordered to stop selling cheese made from raw milk, I share details of another hare-raising story from the Show-Me State: John Dollarhite and his wife Judy of tiny Nixa, Mo., have been told by the USDA that, by Monday, they must pay a fine exceeding $90,000. If they don’t pay that fine, they could face additional fines of almost $4 million. Why? Because they sold more than $500 worth of bunnies — $4,600 worth to be exact — in a single calendar year."

"Krugman worries that the ECB will show some backbone – refusing any more bailouts to Greece. Then, “it’s all too easy to see how it could start financial dominoes falling across Europe.” That would be a disaster to the Nobel winner. The man learns nothing. Central banks have spent the last 4 years trying to prevent a reckoning of the worlds’ debts. And the debts just get larger."

"That means that over the course of a month, roughly 1.8 million people receive a pat-down. That’s more than four times the population of Atlanta.
That doesn’t sound like 'very, very, very' few people to us.
If Napolitano said that 'a small percentage of passengers' get patted down each month, she would have been correct. But she talked about 'people.' In addition, she used the superlative 'very' three times, even though the TSA’s own figures show that the numbers of passengers who receive a pat-down can top 1 million in a single month.
We rate her statement Pants On Fire."
