- Vanity Fair: The Czar's Rules Apply at Chrysler
- If VF recognizes that "the latest casualty of the economic crisis is the rule of law", then it should become obvious to everyone. Say goodbye to secured lending, capitalism as we know it, and any hope of a quick recovery. The author concludes, "the consequences of upending the rule of law, even if it was done with the best of intentions, may prove far more serious than whatever befalls Chrysler in the Rustbelt." Amen.
- Actions, and intentions, have consequences.
- Obama, Chrysler and the Contracts Clause of the US Constitution
- "The rule of law, not of men -- an ideal tracing back to the ancient Greeks and well-known to our Founding Fathers -- is the animating principle of the American experiment. While the rest of the world in 1787 was governed by the whims of kings and dukes, the U.S. Constitution was established to circumscribe arbitrary government power. It would do so by establishing clear rules, equally applied to the powerful and the weak."

On CO2 "Cap & Trade" Taxes:
- Is Cap & Trade Dead Already?
- Charlie Munger, CEO of Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway, called the [cap-and-trade energy pricing system proposed by President Obama] "monstrously stupid." In an interview with CNBC, Mr. Munger said: "It would be a huge shock to the economy and it wouldn't accomplish very much given the fact that the vast majority of the pollution, or rather the CO2, is coming from a place like China. And so I think it would be almost demented if we would rush into cap-and-trade right now in the middle of this economic crisis."
- Our take: We can't help but wonder if Mr. Munger's opposition would make him a "racist" in the eyes of Janeane Garofalo?

In the "Give Us A Break" Column:
- How Social Security Can Save Us All
- The author concludes by assuring us that "And, lest anyone forget, in more than two centuries of continuous operations, and despite crises far worse than this one, the government has never gone bankrupt." Excuse me? What do you call FDR's confiscating all the gold in the country? The only reason the Federal Government has not gone bankrupt is because the Federal Reserve debases the dollar (aka inflation) on its behalf. Yes, it's true they still "pay", but it is only done via a "pretend payment" of money worth less than the money the debt was issued in. So, run that by us again, what were you saying about the government having never gone bankrupt and how social security can save us all?
