Montana Firearms Freedom Act and State Sovereignty

Montana recently passed a law asserting authority over guns made, sold and held in its state. This formulation is specifically designed to preclude the Federal Government from being able to claim jurisdiction over these weapons.
"It's a gun bill, but it's another way of demonstrating the sovereignty of the state of Montana," said Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer
State sovereignty resolutions have been popping up in several states. NH considered one a couple months ago. Now that Montana has passed this law, Utah is considering following its lead. Minnesota, Alaska, Texas, Tennessee and South Carolina already have. Tom Woods explains, in general, why these laws and resolutions are a big deal has to do with the relationship between the Federal Government, States and the People. If the Federal Government commits unconstitutional acts, and doesn't police itself, is there any recourse?

The large number of state sovereignty resolutions is evidence that numerous states are alarmed at the activity in DC. It is plain that a major dispute is brewing between the States and the Federal Government.
